Guest lecture on medical negligence: The case of Lucy Letby

On August 23, 2024, the faculty of Manipal College of Nursing and the Manipal School of Nursing had a continuing nursing education session on “Medical Negligence: Case of Lucy Letby.” by Dr. Toni Bewley, Adjunct Faculty from Edgehill University, UK. The Department of Fundamentals of Nursing organized the session.
The case discussed by Dr. Toni has garnered significant attention internationally. Hence, the case was discussed to elicit what is right and wrong and how a person can influence the lives of patients in the healthcare industry, especially the vulnerable population. She emphasized the need to identify at-risk nurses or healthcare professionals with personality issues and direct them in the correct direction. She also explained how a faculty member is vital in identifying the students at risk and providing early intervention to avoid hospital mishaps that cost the individual's life. She explained the heart-wrenching story of Lucy Letby and its consequences for the healthcare industry, patients, families, and community.
A total of 30 faculty were included in the session (27 female and 3 male). The session attributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education.
