Overview

The Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV), an integral part of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), is one of India's premier centers for virology research and diagnostics. Committed to global health security, MIV provides state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities for various viral diseases, supporting crucial public health services in disease surveillance and outbreak response. Our laboratory holds a prestigious NABL accreditation (ISO 15189:2022), offering over 40 diagnostic tests under its scope.

MIV’s expertise and critical role in public health are confirmed by its status as an Indian Council of Medical Research - Collaborating Centre of Excellence (ICMR-CCoE). MIV is a recognized National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) Apex Referral Laboratory under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, for Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, and Chikungunya. Beyond diagnostics, we conduct cross-cutting research in basic and applied virology, epidemiology, vaccines, and therapeutics. Our focus includes areas like Influenza, Herpes simplex, Enteroviruses, Human papillomavirus, and Neglected Tropical Diseases, with a current thrust on developing newer technologies for testing antivirals, immunological profiling, and diagnostic kits.

Instrumental in confirming over 200 viral outbreaks, MIV actively supports state and national health services and is a proud member of the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and the Global Virus Network (GVN). We are dedicated to transforming virology on a global scale through innovation and excellence, also offering academic programs including a Ph.D. in Virology and a Master of Science in Clinical Virology.

Our vision is to set global benchmarks in diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of viral diseases by fostering collaborations, promoting innovation, and adhering to the highest standards of excellence.
